The seemingly everlasting king of Steam's most played charts is an FPS every inch as iconic as Half-Life 2. But in terms of shooting and looting, preferably in co-op, it still stands as the zenith of the Borderlands formula. And none of Borderlands 3's villains fill us with anger the way Handsome Jack did. It doesn't quite have the character of Borderlands 2. The colorful cast of characters breaks away from the traditional "fighter, wizard, rogue" archetypes, and each hero is memorable in their own right. With its heavy emphasis on loot, loot, and more loot, Borderlands 3 drowns players in a sea of guns with varying abilities and stats (including a gun that shoots saw blades, and one you can throw like a boomerang while it carries on firing, wounding anyone nearby), conveniently color-coded by rarity. Or you could call it World of Warcraft: The First-Person Shooter. How to describe Borderlands 3… you could say it's the underlying principles of the first and second Borderlands wrapped up in a more pristine shell. The original Modern Warfare is so good, you could throw every other COD at it and the remastered 2007 FPS would still boast more memorable moments than the entire series combined. Holding your actual breath as a sniping duo scuttle through the tall, grassy fields and empty, echoing playgrounds of Pripyat in the all-timer of a mission, 'All Ghillied Up'. Watching in scarcely believable horror as the character you've played half the game as gets vaporised by a pesky little mushroom cloud. Kicking down doors with the iconic Captain Price in an electrifying, rain-lashed tanker infiltration. Dragging the series kicking and screaming from the bloody and muddied trenches of WWII, Modern Warfare re-energized an FPS juggernaut with a breakneck, perfectly paced campaign that's been copied by countless other military shooters since, yet never been remotely matched. The best Call of Duty campaign ever made… and it's not close. What stings even more than the plant-based murder, though? The sad fact that we'll probably never see such a brash, bright or commendably crude FPS like this again. Shunt every second enemy you meet into a cactus, because there's literally always a life-affirmingly sharp cactus lying around. Launch some men into orbit with an alt-fire rocket, then pick them out of the sky like they were clay pigeons. Boot a dude in the balls then kick his head off. Imagine if a new Tony Hawk's game served up tricks but replaced every Ollie and kickflip with increasingly gruesome ways of mangling mutants and you're pretty much there. The genius of Bulletstorm lies with its Skillshots. Beneath, you'll find one of the densest, most detailed, widest branching FPS systems ever devised. On Bulletstorm's surface, you'll find a brash, knowing, don't-give-a-fuck attitude, sitting on a layer of the most gloriously creative cursing you've ever heard in a video game. Never has a game so intelligent tried so hard to look like an idiot, or been so screamingly funny with it. Platform(s): PC, PS4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch When it comes to sandbox shooters, few do madcap spectacle better than Far Cry 6. And all it took was half a dozen entries. Better yet? With the introduction of freedom fighter Dani – who you can actually see, listen to and emote alongside in third-person cutscenes – Far Cry has finally given us a protagonist who's actually worth rooting for. New additions like the Supremo Backpacks open up creative new avenues for both sneaky and explosive chaos, further enlivening Far Cry's already intoxicating power fantasy. Yet look past the dinky dachshund sidekicks named after a Spanish sausage and the typically assured, if samey stealth, and you'll find an FPS that feels like a much needed turning point for Far Cry. Does it still lean heavily on a lot of well-worn Ubisoft tropes? Obviously. It may not be the most important game in the series – that nod goes to the iconic third entry – but Far Cry 6 is still a superior shooter. Platform(s): PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X

"But there is a question we must ask ourselves. Sadly, Messori said, "the dark invention of the 'Crusade' has ended by instilling a feeling of guilt in the West, including among some members of the Church, who are ignorant of what really happened." In addition, "in the East, the legend has turned against the entire West: we all pay - and will continue to pay, the consequences of the Islamic masses' desire for revenge, of their call for vengeance against the 'Great Satan,' which, by the way, is not just the United States, but the whole of Christianity, the very one responsible for the 'Crusades.' After all, is it not Westerners themselves who insist on saying that it was a terrible, unforgivable aggression against the pious, devout and meek followers of the Koran?" Those same 'armed pilgrims' would have been even more surprised had they foreseen the accusations leveled against them of trying to convert the 'infidel,' of securing commercial routes to the West, of creating European 'colonies' in the Middle East." It goes without saying that those who attacked Jerusalem 900 years ago would have been very surprised had they been told that they were engaged in what eventually would be known as the 'first Crusade.' For them it was an itinerary, a 'pilgrimage,' a route, a passage. "In connection with the Crusades, it was anti-Catholic propaganda that invented the name, just as it invented the term Middle Ages, chosen by 'enlightened' historiography to describe the parenthesis of darkness and fanaticism between the splendors of Antiquity and the Renaissance. In an article in "Corriere della Sera," Italy's most important newspaper, Messori wrote, "In order to complete the work of the Reformation, it was 18th century Europe that began the chain of 'Roman infamies' that have become dogma." At the end of the millennium it might well be exacerbated by lack of understanding between the West and Islam.Īccording to Italian Catholic writer Vittorio Messori, the Enlightenment cast a "black legend" shadow on the Crusades, and used it as a weapon in its psychological war against the Roman Catholic Church. Italian Writer Vittorio Messori Joins Debateĭebate over the nature of the Crusades has not abated in this 900th anniversary year of the first Crusade. OCLC Bibliographic Formats and Standards. Also, the detail here is far more than you need for a church library. You will probably need to read one of the books on library cataloging before these materials make sense to you. Bibliographic (MARC, ISBD, AACR) Standards It is often a good idea to browse the subjects that have actually been used in the LC catalog to get ideas. Since the subject lists do not include all possible subdivisions (free floating subdivisions), inexperienced volunteer staff may have some difficulty constructing specific headings based on the LC list. You can search the subject list and even download free authority records. The entire Library of Congress Subject Headings list is many volumes in print form. It is best used as a supplement to Sears. McMichael provides a brief list of subjects especially useful for a church library. It is available at and many larger Christian book stores. Many church libraries use Sears List of Subject Headings (which was designed primarily for public libraries). The entire printed schedule for all topics is very big - more than a full shelf of books. However, you will need to purchase or print a paper copy of the unabridged religion section. I suggest you stick with real Dewey because it is more complete, it is easier to find staff who have experience with it, and it is more likely to be revised to reflect new needs.Ībridged versions of the Library of Congress classification schedules are available free here in pdf format. Many SBC churches use A Classification System for Church Libraries: Based on the Dewey Decimal Classification System (Convention Press, 1996). A free but incomplete and dated outline is available here. It is also available at some religious bookstores, including many Lifeway and Cokesbury stores. You may buy either a complete or an abridged Dewey schedule from OCLC. Most church libraries use the Dewey Decimal Classification. Classification Schedules (Call Number Tables) So your local staff must understand basic cataloging rules and must have access to classification schedules (call number tables) and subject heading lists. In any event, your local staff will have to do some original cataloging, for example to catalog recordings of local church services. If you do decide to download records from another library, then determine the standards that library follows. OCLC has a good list of libraries that use Dewey. If you download records from a public library then the records are likely to include Dewey call numbers and either Sears subject headings or Library of Congress subject headings. The Library of Congress system is complex and it is hard for church staff to learn and use. If you download from a university library or a very big public library, then the records are likely to use Library of Congress call numbers and subject headings. You really need to think carefully about whether you wish to take this approach to cataloging. There is now inexpensive software which allows church staff to search other libraries (for example the Library of Congress or Dallas Theological Seminary) and download complete catalog records with no manual keying. In the past, most church libraries manually typed catalog records and used Dewey for call numbers and Sears for subject headings. One of the biggest problems for church libraries is cataloging materials. I am told the series of books from the Church and Synagogue Library Association is helpful. Just go to the Lifeway website and search for church library or browse the section on church staff resources. The titles seem to change every few years so I hesitate to cite specific titles. The Church Media Department of the Southern Baptist Convention has published a series of about 10 pamphlets covering library administration, facilities, collection development, cataloging and processing, circulation of materials, etc. ACL volunteers sometimes provide free consulting service for libraries in less developed countries. 2008) is a text for beginning librarians in developing countries and is widely used on the mission field. The Librarian's Manual, edited by Ferne Weimer and Kenneth Gill (Association of Christian Librarians, rev ed. La Vose Newton, Church Library Handbook (Harvest House, 1987) is also helpful. This book discusses all phases of library work such as administration, promotion, classifying, cataloging, and processing of both books and AV materials. Books on Library Operationsįor a good overall introduction to church librarianship, see Betty McMichael, The Church Librarian's Handbook: A Complete Guide for the Library and Resource Center in Christian Education (Moody Press, 1998). The Evangelical Church Library Association and the Church and Synagogue Library Association may be able to help you. Resources for Church Libraries Church library organizations (2008) described and provided outcome data from a service delivery model called the transition services integration model (TSIM). To support the fact that their recommendations can work, Certo et al. To improve this situation, they recommended revising current legislation and policy, including the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA), the Rehabilitation Act, the Developmental Disabilities Assistance of Bill of Rights Act, and the Social Security policy. As a result, the rate of return on the public's investment of money in the education for students with disabilities is poor. Postschool outcomes for students with disabilities have not met the intent of this legislation. began their call for seamless transition and federal entitlement to long-term support by describing the legislation behind the three public systems responsible for school-to-work and adult living for individuals with severe intellectual disabilities: (1) public schools (2) rehabilitation and (3) developmental disabilities (DD). (2008) suggested another possible solution, this time with a legislative twist. To solve this problem, Rusch and Braddock (2004) recommended that all students: (1) leave high school either competitively employed or admitted to postsecondary education and (2) have access to long-term support services to ensure a successful transition. Although recent data from the National Longitudinal Transition Study 2 indicate some improvement, students with severe intellectual disabilities continue to transition into segregated employment at unacceptable rates in spite of a multitude of studies, indicating that supported employment is a more cost-effective solution. Postschool outcomes for students with disabilities have been dismal for quite some time now. The sample PDF file has 5 pages and is 556KB in size. There is a direct correspondence between file size and number of pages, because most of the input file size is composed of document text: The content stream for each output document is about 10K (input PDF document has 684KB in content streams, about 10KB per page).Įach output file also has 24KB of fonts, the rest is what it is called "document overhead". If this PDF document is split into 74 files with one page per file, then output file size for each document is about 44KB. Here is a screenshot of "Audit Space Usage" dialog for this document: There are just 25KB of fonts in this document. Most of the file (91%) is taken by Content Streams (page text). Sample PDF file has 74 pages (749KB total file size). Example 1: PDF file without fonts and images. If input PDF file has a set of fonts, then each output file needs to have them as well. The output files cannot be smaller than total number of font resources in the original PDF document. However, if a PDF file has fonts and images, then output files should also contain these fonts and images (in some cases) regardless of number of pages. Why Splitting Does Not Always Reduce File Size? If a PDF file is mostly composed of content streams (text) and has no embedded fonts or images, then splitting such file into multiple documents produces files with sizes that are proportional to number of pages. The example below shows that 53% of the file size are taken by fonts, while only 23% are occupied by actual document text. Press "Audit Space Usage." button to display distribution of the file size among various file components. Open a PDF document and select "File > Save As Other > Optimized PDF." from Acrobat menu. Auditing PDF File Size The Adobe Acrobat provides excellent function for inspecting PDF file structure. The higher is image resolution, the more space images will take. The image resolution (image dimension in pixels) is also crucial. Color images take up more space than monochrome or grayscale images. The resolution and bit-depth of images greatly affects overall file size. The second reason is using images for creating PDF file. It is recommended to avoid using Adobe Acrobat to directly editing text in PDF documents. Adding a single font to a PDF document may increase file size by 400-600KB. Fonts can be subsetted and embedded right into PDF file. The first reason is that one or more fonts are stored inside PDF document. Causes of File Size Increase Typically, there are two major reasons why PDF file size can be "disproportionally" large. This means that number of pages cannot be used to measure how large or small a specific PDF file should be. Depending on internal file structure, content streams might occupy just a small percentage of the overall file size or almost an entire document. PDF File Size and Number of Pages The only part of the PDF file that is proportional in size to number of pages is "content streams". Document overhead and various low level elements such as extended graphics states, structure info and etc.Content streams (the actual text content of the document). What PDF file is composed of? PDF file is composed from multiple components: It is crucial to understand the actual file size allocation between various PDF components before attempting to reduce the size of the specific PDF document or making any conclusions that file is "too big" for the number of pages. Similar questions arise when splitting a PDF document into multiple files and discovering that resulting file sizes are not proportional to number of pages. Understanding PDF File Size PDF File Size Issue Quite often users are wondering why a specific PDF file is so big while it is just few pages long.
